Roy Woods is a shapeshifter and jack of all trades. The Brampton, Ontario, native’s music has never been boxed into one, which has been made evident in the hit records he has released that have showcased his ability to fuse even more new sounds and styles to his crossover Hip-Hop to R&B persona. With his highly anticipated sophomore album Mixed Emotions slated to release in Summer 2022, Woods gave music enthusiasts a glimpse of what to expect with his single “Insecure” in May 2022. Since signing to Drake’s OVO Sound record label in 2015, Roy has darted between brash rap tracks, ecstatic EDM, low-key dancehall (a nod to his Guyanese heritage and his Toronto roots), and even gleaming pop. The entertainer’s talents have also landed him as a performer on some of the largest stages in the country including a number of Rolling Loud cities, Drake and Future’s Summer 16 Tour, Lollapalooza, Hennessy Artistry, his own headlining Roy Woods Unlocked Tour and more. This willingness to experiment was prominent at a young age as the entertainer grew up inspired by iconic and revolutionary acts including Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Usher, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and Nelly to name a few. His work of art, which he writes himself as well as occasionally produces, would go on to include a 2015 EP entitled Exis, (peaked #10 Billboard Top R&B Albums Chart), 2016’s Walking At Dawn EP (first Billboard Top 200 Chart placement) with lead singles “Gwan Big Up Yourself” and “How I Feel,” and the 2017 project Nocturnal with focus tracks “Instinct” and “Love.” 2017 also saw Woods’ extremely well received debut studio album Say Less whose titled track peaked at #92 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. Not only a fan favorite, but a special artist amongst industry colleagues, Woods has collaborated with fellow chart topping acts including Drake, Rich the Kid, Swae Lee, PartyNextDoor, Wolf Tyla, DVSN Lil Yatchy and more. As his music evolved to a self described more mature and open place regarding love, Roy released his 2020 EP Dem Times which was a project about the unpredictable nature of life demonstrated on the singles “What We Did'' and “Cool J.” Even as he’s released more sensitive music, the creator has, of course, explored other sounds heard on “Shot Again” and “Bubbly,” which accumulated over 10 million streams. Roy has demonstrated his boundary-pushing approach to music and with his hypnotic work connecting with fans, he now has over 2 billion streams across all platforms and has garnered an impressive 1 million Instagram followers. It’s all the result of being unafraid to push himself. For Roy Woods, nothing is off-limits.
